Council Meetings & Public Participation

Council meetings are where elected officials consider municipal business, set policies, approve budgets and expenditures, and make decisions affecting the community. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in local government through the following opportunities.

Attend a Council Meeting

Regular Council meetings are generally open to the public. Meeting dates, agendas, and approved minutes are available on the Municipality's website.

Correspondence to Council

Residents may submit written correspondence for Council's consideration. Depending on submission deadlines and the nature of the matter, correspondence may be included on a Council agenda and become part of the public record.

Speak to Council (Delegations)

Individuals, businesses, community organizations, and other groups may request to appear before Council or a Standing Committee to provide input on matters being considered by Council. Residents are encouraged to provide written information whenever possible. Advance submissions allow Administration time to review the matter, gather relevant background information, identify applicable legislation, policies, by-laws, operational considerations, and potential financial impacts, and prepare information for Council's consideration. This information can then be presented alongside the submission to help Council better understand the issue and any available options.

Providing information in advance helps ensure Council members have access to the same information before a meeting and supports fair, informed, and transparent decision-making. Written submissions often result in a more thorough review of a matter than issues raised for the first time during a meeting.

Service Requests and Concerns

Many questions, concerns, and requests can be addressed directly by Administration without appearing before Council. Residents are encouraged to contact the Municipal Office first so staff can provide assistance, investigate the matter, or explain any applicable municipal processes.

Closed Meetings

Council meetings are generally open to the public; however, Council may meet in closed session when permitted by legislation for matters such as legal issues, personnel matters, or land transactions.

Respectful Participation

Council meetings are conducted in accordance with the Municipality's Procedural By-law. All participants are expected to conduct themselves respectfully to ensure meetings can proceed in an orderly and productive manner.
