It’s a pleasant stroll along the walking trails in the park that wind their way to the mystical Old Oak Tree.
In the summer of 2023, our beloved Old Oak Tree was damaged by a storm. Sadly, it could not be saved. Researchers from the University of Winnipeg came out to assess the tree and find its age. At the height of 70cm, the minimum origin date is 1575 which made it 450 years old at that height. It could have easily taken another 50 years to grow to that point. Many elements affect tree growth and since the main trunk was rotten, only an estimate can be made regarding the true age of our Old Oak Tree. 450 years is a conservative guess.
When the researchers were here doing their work, they assessed some other trees in the area and have designated a “new” Old Oak Tree for future generations to hike to. This new “Heritage Tree” is estimated to be around 440 years old.
We are very fortunate to have such a mature forest of Oak Trees in our community and are happy to share them with visitors to our beautiful Victoria Park.
Be sure to visit the Lookout Tower which is also accessed through the winding park trails for inspiring views of the community.
